This audio work responds to the film with its bold title of Mogok, which translates to ‘strike’. In 1957, the year of Mogok’s release, an actual industrial dispute took place between Shaw Brothers and PERSAMA (Persatuan Artiste Malaya, a film workers union). In the film, the studio’s entrance was used as a film location, the site of an imaginary strike by workers in a battery factory. The studio was also the site of a then real dispute where more than 120 employees of Malay Film Productions Ltd. picketed at the gates. Listeners of the sound piece stand before the gates of 8 Jalan Ampas as silent witnesses caught in the dialogue between real and imaginary strikes.

This work is made in collaboration with voice talent Izzad Radzali Shah, and Malay language consultant Siti Fatimah.
